SAMBALPUR: The scene under a tree at the district headquarters hospital here on Saturday with doctors screening patients  looked more like a free health camp.   However, it was a casualty that the hospital faced after the TB and Chest ward was flooded with sewage and rainwater following Friday night downpour. It took the hospital staff hours to drain it out manually from the ward.  With the hospital devoid of a proper drainage system and the new construction lowering the verandah height of the old structures, rainwater entered four rooms of TB and Chest ward. The stench from the ward was unbearable. This forced two doctors of the department, Subhash Mandal and Santosh Naik, to treat patients under a tree right on the road in front of the ward. Since the tables could not be moved out of the ward, they managed with some old stools.  Although the scene is repeated every monsoon for past couple of years, no concrete steps have been taken to improve things.  Ironically, the hospital receives huge funds under the NRHM but the basic needs are not addressed. The drain around the TB and Chest ward is overflowing. Had it been cleaned and desilted, the rainwater could have been easily drained out, said hospital sources.Admitting the situation, CDMO B P Guru said that funds for the work had been placed with the Public Works Department, but they are yet to take it up.  Guru, however, promised that he would take up the matter with the Public Works Department and ensure that it is expedited.
