Union Home minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday cancelled his US trip owing to the ongoing turmoil in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and deferred it till September.
The Home Minister was supposed to lead the Indian delegation at the Indo-US Homeland Security Dialogue to be
held in Washington with the US team to be headed by Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Charles Johnson.
Singh is reportedly meeting a delegation led by Maulana Umer Iliyasi, chief All India Imams Organisation at his residence and will also attend the high level meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
PM Modi who returned to the capital post his 4-nation African tour on Tuesday will chair a meeting of top officials to take a stock of the situation in the valley which has witnessed severe clashes and protests since Friday leading to the loss of more than 30 lives.
The clashes between protesters and security officials began after a 21-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wanni, considered as the poster boy of militancy in the valley was gunned by security forces.
A Home Ministry official however has cited the busy schedule during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament that will commence on July 18 as the reason for the deferment of the visit.
