Chennai: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev chose to opt out of a cancer research event at IIT-Madras after a co-sponsor pulled out of the event citing the Patanjali founder’s recent remarks where he had said that ‘karma’ (deeds) is one of the reasons that cause the killer disease.
According to a New Indian Express report, professors of the institute have confirmed the development that Ramdev chose not to attend the International Conference on Translational Cancer Research on February 8-11 for some “prior commitments”.
“The organising committee informed the local organisers here about Ramdev opting out of the event in a mail. However, we are not sure if it’s because of the media reports,” Prof Karunagaran said in the report.
The event is being attended by several cancer specialists who are to discuss 'cancer prevention and treatment'. Yoga guru Ramdev was supposed to attend the event as the chief guest and address the cancer specialists on ‘cancer and modern medicine’.
Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had first come up with the thought that those dying of cancer or accidents are facing the consequences of their ‘karma’ or actions. While Sarma was faced with a lot of criticism from all quarters, Ramdev chose to voice his support for Sarma and said that it is true that one has to bear with the consequences of one’s deeds.
When asked why was the Yoga guru invited to speak on cancer research, Prof Karunagaran told New Indian Express that it was the organizers’ idea to invite him. US-based cancer researcher MD Anderson Cancer Center that had sponsored the event last year as well, chose not to continue with the same this year.
