New Delhi: Samsung has announced the launch of its new Galaxy Tab S in India. The tablet will comes in two sizes - 8.4-inches and 10.5 inches. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is priced at Rs 37,800, while the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 will be available for Rs 44,800. The new tablets will be available in India from mid-July.
The devices offer similar specifications to the iPad Mini and iPad Air and went on sale in the US at the same prices. They were, therefore, expected to come to India India at prices similar to that of iPads, but the tablets have been priced much higher in the Indian market.
Both the variants feature a WQXGA (2560x1600, 16:10) Super AMOLED display (with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio) and are 6.6mm thin. Both models will come engineered with an Exynos 5 Octa processor (1.9GHz quad-core + 1.3GHz quad-core) along with 3GB RAM. Running Android 4.4 (KitKat), they offer 16GB of internal storage and have a microSD card slot that supports cards of up to 128GB.
The tablets have an 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is packed with a 7,900mAh battery, while the 8.4-inch mode has a 4,900mAh battery. Both the tablet are available in Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White colours.
The new S series steps up competition from Samsung, which up to now has been selling lower-cost devices.
Samsung is the second largest producer of tablets, with some 22 per cent of the global market in the first quarter of 2014, compared with 32.5 per cent for Apple and its iPad, according to research firm IDC.
