BANGALORE: Chitra Samooha, an organistion devoted to films, felicitated the national award winning Kannada film directors on Saturday. Speaking after the felicitation, director of the film Bettada Jeeva P Sheshadri said: “We often hear that Kannada films are not good. People say they have neither character nor story. But the awards seem to tell a different story. We have been bagging 3-4 awards every year since last 10 years and this year hasn’t been different.” The directors and producers of ‘Hejjegalu’,’Bettada Jeeva’ and ‘Puttakana Highway’ were felicitated. Cinematographer and member of the Awards Committee G S Bhaskar was thanked for his contribution to Kannada cinema. Manu Chakravarthy was credited for bringing about a revolution in the Kannada film industry after bringing home the best critic award after 18 years. Also present on the occasion was four-time national award winner, film-maker Girish Kasaravalli. Speaking about the Kannada film industry, he said: “We can either make films by heart or by money. Off-beat films don’t work here. The problem is the lack of facilities, not talent. For movies to work, we need to develop an alternate medium such as in America and Europe”.Novelist S L Byrappa, speaking on the occasion, said: “I can’t talk about this field. But what I do know is that it is ruled by money. The concept of remakes is outrageous as India is a diverse country and every language has its own audience. If producers are saying they are not getting any returns, they should invest in a brick industry or steel industry. Movies should not be made business.” He advised people to use the industry as an educative medium instead of corrupting it. Eminent Sandalwood personalities were present.
