PUDUCHERRY: ‘Save earth, because it is the only planet with chocolate.’ This slogan,pasted on a small piece of paper on a tree trunk, says it all. A handful of activists and artists gathered near the Aai Mandapam at Bharathi Park here on Monday to create awareness of the need to conserve the environment and to say no to plastic. The artists created a huge sculpture using waste plastic bottles collected from the nearby hotels on the occasion of the World Environment Day. The sculptors also chipped in with a sculpture of a human head choked with plastic bottles, symbolic of humans adversely affected by the excessive use of plastic in daily life. A kolam, made using flowers near the sculpture, depicted the fact that it was conservation of nature that is our only hope of survival.According to event coordinator Kirti Chandak, the activists would collect 10 huge sacks filled with bottles from hotels and kalyana mandapams within half a day. “One can imagine the use of plastic materials from this. It is high time we put an end to this,” she said.Kirti opined that people should be aware of the importance of segregation of plastic waste or even reduce plastic use for a clean, green and healthy world.Artists D Saravana, Prabhat Biswas, Viswajyothi, T Saroja and others took part in the awareness campaign, which attracted children as wellas grown-ups.
