Shoot-at-sight order in Chennai after violence
District SPs have been empowered to carry out the order.

Chennai: In the backdrop of violent protests by lawyers, Tamil Nadu on Friday night issued shoot-at-sight orders against those trying to damage public property and involve in anti-social activities.

A release from the DGP's office said district SPs have been empowered to carry out the order.

Appropriate action would be taken against those who try to damage vehicles or involve in other illegal activities, it said.

"Some anti-social elements were using Thursday's incidents to damage public property and burn vehicles", the release said.

Strict actions would be taken against them, it said, adding security has been beefed up across the state after clashes between lawyers and the police at the High Court.

Courting controversies

The Tamil Nadu state assembly witnessed fresh bouts of verbal duels on Friday morning.

Opposition demanded a debate of the lawyer-police clashes of Thursday. The government issued a statement saying that the violence started because lawyers resisted arrest. The arrest was to be made over the attack on Janata party president Subramanium Swamy.

The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court has called for a CBI probe into the clashes as courts and tribunals across the state stayed shut on Friday.

"You ask me, 110 is misused so that after that there is no debate. We are not allowed to raise any issue and we are pushed out of the legislature. That is what is happening here. No freedom of speech and we cannot speak even in the Assembly. Where else can we go and raise such important issues?" said Bader, an AIADMK MLA.

"There is no justice even in courts. Like Amma (AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa) said Article 356 must be enforced and this government must be dissolved," added Paneerselvam, another AIADMK MLA.
