New Delhi: Freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's 118th birth anniversary is being observed throughout the country. Bose was born on January 23, 1897 in Cuttack and reportedly died on August 18, 1945 in an air crash.

But there is still no conclusive proof of his death with his supporters claiming that he survived. When under house arrest by the British authorities, Netaji had escaped from India in 1941 to seek international support for the country's freedom struggle. After organising the Indian National Army with Japanese help he went missing in 1945.

The Indian National Army comprised of Indian soldiers of the British Indian army who had been captured during World War II. He gave many popular slogans like 'Jai Hind' and vowed to throw out the British from India by force using the INA.

He was last seen at the Bangkok Airport on August 17, 1945.

A firebrand leader, Bose was a member of the Indian National Congress and advocated a tough stand against the British much to the discomfort of other senior Congress leaders including Mahatama Gandhi. He left the Congress and formed the All India Forward Bloc in 1939 following massive differences with Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

During his visit to Odisha on Wednesday, BJP president Rajnath Singh asked the Centre to reveal how Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose met his end and under what circumstances. Seeking an end to the mystery behind the death of the "real hero" of the country, Singh said it was the responsibility of the Union government to let people know the truth.

"The entire country is impatient to know as to how Netaji died and under what circumstances," the BJP president said while releasing a book on the great leader in Bhubaneswar on the eve of Netaji's birth anniversary.

Rajnath also said that he would visit Netaji's birth place at Odia Bazaar in Cuttack and garland his statue before leaving the state on Thursday.
