The purchase price of the sugarcane for the new crushing season is expected to be fixed in a day or two after holding parleys with Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, Agriculture minister Umesh Katti said here on Thursday.
After chairing a three-hour meeting that was attended by the representatives of the Sugarcane Growers Association, sugar factories and senior officials of the state government, he told newspersons that during the meeting demand was made to procure sugarcane with 9.5 per cent sugar content for over Rs 3,000 per tonne.
The farmers have also demanded that procuring sugar factories should bear the cost of cutting and transportation,he said.
He said that the government had set a committee to decide the revenue sharing formula between the sugar factories and the farmers on the sale of power, molasses and other by-products of sugarcane and a report was expected next month.
Meanwhile, farmers’ leader Kodihalli Chandrashekhar said: “We have demanded that the state announce Rs 2,800 per tonne as sugarcane purchase price in a day or two before conceding their plea to fix Rs 3,500 per tonne as the final price.”
