Indore: A teacher at an institute for speech and hearing impaired in Indore was arrested on Wednesday after two students accused him of molesting them several times.

The girls had approached the police at an awareness session at Tukoganj police station, which has a help centre with sign language experts.

Following the complaint, a zero FIR was registered and the accused, one Gopal Khede, was arrested. He was remanded to judicial custody and his plea for bail rejected.

City SP Manoj Ratnakar initially denied having information about the case, but later said the matter was being probed. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also ordered prompt action in the case.

The centre’s head backed Khede and said he was unlikely to be involved in such an act. She said he had been a teacher at the institute for 17 years and had been extremely dedicated and sober in all his years there.

She denied having received any complaints from the students. “Kids at the institute were very upset with allegations being levelled against their favourite teacher,” she said, adding that she wished to meet police officers.
