Jerusalem: Israeli forces claim to have killed a senior Hezbollah leader just before the UN ceasefire took effect, the army said early on Wednesday.

The army said its forces killed the head of Hezbollah's special forces, who they identified as Sajed Dawayer.

Both sides continued attacks right up until the ceasefire went into effect at 8 am Lebanon time on Monday.

A Hezbollah spokesman said he knew noone of that name.

Hours earlier Hezbollah official Naim Kassem said that none of the guerrilla group's senior leaders died during the fighting.

Israeli war planes carried out dozens of raids during the 34-day conflict, trying kill Hezbollah leaders.
