The new feature lets users mute others for as long as they want. Users remain muted until you manually unmute them.

New Delhi: After rolling out the new Facebook-like profile page to all its users, Twitter has now started experimenting with a new feature for its mobile apps. The new feature, which is still in the testing phase, lets users mute accounts that they follow so as to prevent other users' tweets and retweets from appearing in their timeline.

According to a report from The Verge, users can see an option to mute accounts on both Android and iOS versions of the app. The new feature lets users mute others for as long as they want. Users remain silent until you manually unmute them.

It seems to be a good feature as it lets you ignore tweets from people without having to unfollow them. At times, you follow people under pressure even though you find their tweets annoying. So, by simply clicking the mute button, you can get rid of their tweets without unfollowing them.

This mute feature also may prove to be of use when someone is live tweeting an event or tweeting about something you are simply not interested in. So, you can mute users for various lengths of time.

While muting is a new feature for the Twitter app, third-party Twitter clients have been offering this feature for a long time. Muting is one of the most popular features in TweetDeck, which Twitter acquired in 2011. Third-party twitter app Tweetbot also lets users mute accounts.
