BANGALORE: The increasing use and development of technology definitely has not affected the number of visitors at City Central Library in Palace Guttahalli (North zone). At present, the library has a total number of 150 members and a collection of 42,000 existing books. As far as facilities like drinking water and toilet room are concerned, the visitors has no qualms. However, space crunch is a major issue.Since the library is situated within a residential area, the surroundings of the library is calm and quiet. “I come here often and spend my time reading newspapers. The surroundings of the library is very quiet and peaceful, that’s all one needs”, said Subramaniam K, a senior citizen and a regular visitor to the library. “Earlier, we had close to 62,000 books, of which 20,000 books were given to the new libraries in the rural zones,” said Ramaswami, who is the in charge of the library.Ganesh Hegde, a student of second year Bcom said, “I come here whenever I am free and spend most of my time reading dailies/newspapers.” The working hours of the library are from 8 to 11.30 am and from 4 to 8 pm. The instructions and the subject names on the book shelves are written both in Kannada and English. The library comprises of a single floor and this seem to be the major problem for the visitors here. “Whenever there is a huge gathering of visitors, people are seen standing outside the library and reading newspapers,” said Ramaswami. “Since there is no sufficient space for the readers, we took a step forward and spoke to the local MLA about the problem. So far we had a positive result. We have also received permission to build another floor, for which the construction will start from next month,” said Thimmaiah, a local social worker. Ramaswami further added, “It would also be of great use if we could remove the wall which separate the paper section and the novel section and have pillars instead, in order to make the room more spacious. We are planning to shift the children’s section to the new floor so that we can create more space on the new floor.”Other than lack of space, the visitors here seem to be satisfied with the facilities and the materials provided to them.
