WB govt must explain stand on CBI probe: HC
WB govt has been asked to explain its stand on initiating a CBI probe into Lalgarh violence.

New Delhi: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday asked the West Bengal government to explain its stand on recommending a CBI investigation into the Lalgarh massacre.

The court also asked the governemnt to clarify its stand on state operations to dismantle arms camps in the region, if any.

The HC was responding to a PIL filed by the Calcutta HC bar association seeking a CBI probe into killing of villagers in West Midnapore on January 7.

The Calcutta HC also directed the West Bengal govt to file an affidavit by Friday responding to the allegations made by petitioners in the Lalgarh massacre case.

In the affidavit, besides the response, the West Bengal government has also been asked to explain its stand on initiating a CBI investigation into the case.

The affidavit should also include the government's stand on the joint central and state forces operations to dismantle arms camps in the region if any.

The government has been directed to clarify its stand on paying interim compensation the families of Lalgarh victims.
