Purab Kohli, better known as KD, courtesy his film ‘Rock On’, has embarked his journey from the TV show ‘Hip Hip Hurray’ to where he is today in a remarkable way. When IBNLive.com asked him about how this journey has been so far, he quipped that it not only feels really good but also makes one aspire for doing more projects that the entire country watches. “When people talk about things that you did 17 years back including ‘Hip Hip Hurray’ and travel shows; it feels really good to have been a part of this industry and to gather a fan following who still talks about your previous projects. You feel a little old too (laughs). Of course, I long for doing films and projects that the whole country watches. It’s definitely a career to look back that left an impression, influenced and may be inspired few people. That’s far bigger than any appreciation.”
But there’s more to Purab Kohli than just acting; he’s definitely one of the quirkiest travellers you might ever talk to. Purab, who has many travel shows to his credit including ‘Life Mein Ek Baar’ and even a budget travelling show ‘Freedom express’, knows how to make the most of his life.
Excerpts from the interview…
Work hard, earn and travel
"I started working when I was very young, probably at 18. Back then, it was just something to do over the weekends. While my friends got just pocket money, I made more money than my peers. My pocket money suddenly increased from 1000 to 5000. Immediately, I moved to a channel which was a straight hike for me (from Rs 5000 to Rs 25000). Life, career wise started with something to fill up my time; I was just having fun with travel shows back then."
Been there, done that
"I have pretty much seen the whole country, mostly every state of India. That’s what I’m proud of. When people ask me what I’m educated in, I say travelling - I learnt a lot about myself at a very young age. It’s my upbringing."
Must-visits from his travel-diary
"I think you should definitely go to the mountains, across the border. It starts in Kashmir, goes into Uttarakhand and then the North Eastern part and don’t miss Nepal. These places have flawless mountains. I think mountains put you in place; humble you. I would recommend everyone to visit the mountains every once in a while and just enjoy the feel."
Because every traveller has a story to share
"From people in Hoshangaba, MadhyaPradesh, there’s an interesting guy that still sticks to my mind. Back in 1999, three of us were shooting for a budget travel show in Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh where we were going around with just Rs 150 per head-per day. It might sound unrealistic but yes, we did that. We were using camera-tactics to actually live through the day; we used to go to people, negotiate and they used to offer us good rates and good discounts after that. So when we were week in that trip, we went to a small hotel and started our usual tactic. The owner just kept looking at us; he didn’t react. After I finished my rants, he simply said, "Aapko sharam aani chaiye; itna achha camera, itna ache kapde and ek chhote se hotel mein bargain kar rahe ho (you should be ashamed, you’ve such a good camera, you’re wearing such good clothes and you’re bargaining at a small hotel)". I felt so bad. That tone; he ripped me off. He just shattered my work. Though he ended up offering us a good discount, but he just wasn’t affected by the camera at all."
