While the sexual assault allegations have shaken up the Malayalam Film Industry, Tamil actors have also started sharing their horrific stories of harassment. Now, actor and television serial producer Kutti Padmini has alleged rampant sexual harassment in the Tamil television show industry. In a recent interview with NDTV, she claimed that directors ask for sexual favours.
“This is a profession like any other – doctors, lawyers, IT person. Why it has to be a flesh trade? It is very wrong,’ Kutti Padmini said.
“Directors and technicians demand sexual obligations from women artistes in tv serials,” the actress alleged and then added, “Many women do not complain as sexual harassment can’t be proved. Some women tolerate this as they earn well.” She even claimed that many women “have committed suicide” over it.
Kutti further questioned a ban on singer Chimayi and actor Sri Reddy, who previously raised their voices against sexual harassment in the industry. The actress further claimed that even she was sexually harassed as a child artist and revealed what happened when she decided to raise her voice against it. “I was thrown out of a Hindi film when my mom raised the issue,” she said.
In the last few days, several actresses from the Malayalam film industry have come out to share their horrific cases of sexual harassment. Among others, a complaint has also been filed against CPI(M) MLA and actor Mukesh, actor Jayasurya, and Edavela Babu for sexual and verbal assault.
It all started after the findings of the Justice Hema Committee Report were made public earlier this month. In the wake of the same, Mohanlal also recently resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists. The actor announced his decision and left everyone shocked. He was the president of the association and had a 17-member executive committee. However, all the members of the executive committee submitted their joint resignation.
