'Jagjit Singh Was Shaken After Daughter's Death': When Chitra Made Rare Comment About Late Husband
Singer Jagjit Singh's wife Chitra Singh had once spoken about his bond with his step-daughter, Monica.

Jagjit Singh lived a tragic life. The singer, best known for his ghazal songs, lost his only son to a car accident in 1990. Mahesh Bhatt recently revealed that Jagjit had to pay a bribe to get his son, Vivek Singh’s mortal remains. While the tragedy shook the country, the industry and fans were in was a big shock when it was revealed that his step-daughter Monica died by suicide in 2009. Although the singer hadn’t spoken much about his losses with the press, his wife, Chitra Singh had once opened up about the impact Monica’s death had on him.

Chitra, who was also a singer but took a step away from the limelight after Vivek’s death, had Monica from her first marriage. In an interview with Filmfare a year after Jagjit’s death in 2012, Chitra said that Jagjit was ‘shaken’ after Monica’s death. “He called me Mummy, I called him Papa. When Baboo (their late son Vivek) was alive, I’d say, ‘Jaao, Papa ko bulao’. That’hos how I too began calling him Papa,” she explained while speaking about Jagjit.

“Papa was shaken after Monica’s death. He had seen her as a five-year-old. She was like his daughter. He was touring America then. He cancelled his shows, kept flying for two days catching connecting flights to reach home. He was distraught though he never expressed much. But his quiet presence and support was enough,” she said. “My daughter was so beautiful and strong. She handled things singlehandedly! But ultimately, she lost, she couldn’t cope any more. She had a rough life (referring to Monica’s failed marriages),” she added.

Jagjit, who was born on February 8, 1941, was known for his heartbreaking and moving ghazals that often left everyone in tears. The singer had sung popular compositions such as Chithi Na Koi Sandesh, Woh Kagaz Ki Kashti Aaj, Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho and Charage Ishq Jalaane Ki Raat Aaye Hai, to name a few.
