In recent years, audience reactions to films have become increasingly unpredictable, with some movies finding unexpected success on television despite underperforming in theatres. A notable example is Mahesh Babu’s Khaleja, which initially flopped in theatres but gained significant attention when broadcast on TV and YouTube. Similarly, Ram Pothineni’s Skanda saw a surge in TRP ratings after its television premiere.
Ram Pothineni’s collaboration with director Boyapati Sreenu, Skanda, was highly anticipated by fans due to Sreenu’s reputation for mass-oriented films. Upon its theatrical release on September 28, 2023, the movie received negative reviews and failed to meet expectations at the box office. Criticisms were directed towards its storyline and screenplay.
Despite its theatrical setback, Skanda experienced a remarkable turnaround during its world television premiere on Star Maa, earning an impressive 8.11 TRP rating. Notably, it competed with Balakrishna’s Bhagavanth Kesari, which aired simultaneously but was overshadowed by Skanda in terms of viewership.
Skanda: The Attacker is a 2023 Telugu action film produced by Srinivasaa Chitturi under Srinivasaa Silver Screen in collaboration with Zee Studios. The movie features Ram Pothineni in a dual role, alongside actors such as Sreeleela, Saiee Manjrekar, Srikanth, Sharath Lohithaswa, Ajay Purkar, Daggubati Raja and Prince Cecil.
Announced in February 2022 under the tentative title BoyapatiRAPO, the film was officially titled Skanda in July 2023. Principal photography commenced in October 2022 and concluded by August 2023. Thaman S composed the music, while Santosh Detake handled cinematography and Tammiraju managed editing.
Despite its lukewarm reception in theatres, Skanda grossed Rs 59 crore against a budget of Rs 50 crore. The film’s ending hinted at a potential sequel, labelled Unfolding in Skanda- II. Boyapati Sreenu announced in an interview that he would not pursue a sequel due to the movie’s poor box-office performance.
Skanda, as a film, is a prime example of the shifting dynamics of audience preferences, showcasing how a film’s fortunes can change dramatically from theatres to television screens.
