The World is Waiting for K-pop Band BTS to Win at Grammys 2021, Here's Why
BTS' nomination and performance is the most-anticipated part of Grammys this year, and fans are hoping the band will be making history again tonight.

During interviews in the run-up to Grammys 2021, BTS leader RM has said that he is not pinning hopes on a win. BTS is the first Korean pop band to have been nominated at the Grammys, competing with the likes of Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Justin Bieber in the best pop duo/group performance category. The rapper (real name Kim Namjoon) said that he doesn’t expect to win against world famous talents like these.

In another interview, vocalist Park Jimin said that he has a feeling they will win, and was quickly shushed by other members who do not want to set themselves up for disappointment, even though their fans, the ARMYs world over are going to tune into tonight’s Grammys to hoping to see the septet bag the trophy for their song Dynamite.

Dynamite has been nominated alongwith chartbusters like Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s ‘Rain on Me’, Taylor Swift and Bon Iver’s ‘Exile’ and Justin Bieber and Quavo’s ‘Intentions’ and J Balvin, Bad Bunny and Dua Lipa’s ‘Un Dia (One Day). The song is a bomb in itself, having broken countless records ever since its release August 21, 2020. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making BTS the first all-South Korean act to top the Hot 100.

The song has already made three Guinness World Records with its YouTube views, won two gongs at People’s Choice Awards, one trophy at MTV Europe Music Awards and several other wins at award shows in South Korea and Japan.

The Bangtan Boys set out on their world domination journey since their debut in 2013 with seven members – Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook. The group was the brainchild of veteran writer and producer Bang Shi Hyuk, who formed Big Hit Entertainment and put BTS together around group leader, RM. They started out as a hip-hop group, with three rappers and four vocalists, but their music style has evolved massively over the years.

Currently they are the most popular K-pop act to have ever come out of South Korea, with fanbases all over the world. They were named the best-selling artists of 2020 by the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), becoming the first non-Western act to win the title. They have delivered countless hits in the last 8 years, winning 5 Billboard Music Awards, 6 American Music Awards, and 6 MTV Video Music Awards so far.

In 2019 they became the first Asian and first non-English speaking artist ever to headline and sell out Wembley Stadium, alongside several sold-out shows as part of their Love Yourself world tour. The Hallyu has made several Korean artists famous all over the world, but BTS sits right at the top with their massive fan count and record-breaking music.

So you can’t blame the ARMYs if they pin hopes on a Grammy win this year. The members themselves have several times mentioned that Grammys is their next target. The group has attended the awards for the last two years: first in 2019, as presenters, and again in 2020, when they made a cameo during Lil Nas X’s performance of Old Town Road. This year, they will be the show’s only Asian performer. The boys are also super excited to have a stage to themselves this time, saying that more than the trophy, they are looking forward to showing their performance to the world.

With so much anticipation surrounding their win and performance, many ARMYs are disappointed that the category BTS is performing in will not be part of the main Grammys ceremony to be aired from 8pm ET. It will be live streamed as part of a Grammy premiere ceremony before the main event. Many are considering this a snub, considering the eyeballs BTS is expected to get for the Grammys.

One fan tweeted, “Why do they have to snub everything from us? The least they could have done is presented it in the main ceremony. The most talked about category of the day is being kept for the preview. SO DUMB!” Another said, “Not televising the most talked about and anticipated category? I think we all know why. And yes, it’s the most talked about, bc of bts.” Another said, “Rap, r&b and pop duo are not getting televised… Grammy are really racist and xenophobic and they’re not even hiding it!”

Whether they win or not, every eye is on Grammys tonight to see if the K-pop band makes history once again. There is no question about their position as K-pop kings, the gramophone-shaped trophy will be an added jewel to their already dazzling crown. Music lovers are also hoping that their win will make the Grammys take artists in other languages more seriously.
