The Law Commision on Wednesday said “concerating the final document for over one nation, one poll would require some more time” and more meetings have to be done.
According to sources, the law panel also said that certain “constitutional amendments are required for smooth and flexible one nation, one poll”.
The panel, however, is yet to decide on reducing age of consent and a report on that would be available later today.
Law commission of India met on Wednesday to finalise its report regarding One Nation One Poll and also on the question whether the age of consent under POCSO Act can be reduced from 18 to 16.
The report by the 22nd Law Commission, which was supposed to be submitted to the Law Ministry, comprises three — the third one being recommendation of a law to provide for online filing of First Information Reports (FIR).
It is being said that the Commission is likely to frame tentative timelines for simultaneous polls for the 2024 and 2029 cycles.
Sources privy to the development have told News18 that One Nation One Poll would be beneficial not only in national interest but would also save a lot of financial reserves of the government.
Another observation that the Commission has got is that voter turnout increases when elections are held after a substantial period of time implying that ONOP could actually result in higher voter turnouts. If the country is gripped in continuous poll, security forces too would be engaged, sources said.
