Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the Supreme Court’s verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 to be ‘historic’, while also saying that it is not just a legal judgment but a ‘beacon of hope’.

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 — which granted a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir — and directed the Election Commission to hold Assembly elections in the Union Territory by September 30, 2024.
Reading the judgment written by himself, Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that Article 370 was temporary provision and the President has the power to abrogate it.
The SC upheld the decision to carve out the union territory of Ladakh from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 as well.
The former state of J&K does not have internal sovereignty different from other states of the country, CJI said.
Reacting to the top court’s verdict, PM Modi took to the microblogging site X and said that this ‘historic’ verdict constitutionally upholds the decision taken on August 5, 2019 by the Indian Parliament. “It is a resounding declaration of hope, progress and unity for our sisters and brothers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh,” the prime minister wrote.

He also said that in its ‘profound wisdom’, the top court has strengthened the core of unity, that Indians hold dear and cherish over anything else.
The prime minister assured the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh that the BJP-led Centre’s commitment to fulfilling their “dreams remains unwavering”.
He said they are determined that the results of their progress not only reaches the people but also extends their benefits “to the most vulnerable and marginalised sections of our society who suffered due to Article 370.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the top court’s verdict is not just a “legal judgment” but a “beacon of hope, a promise of a brighter future and a testament to our collective resolve to build a stronger, more united India”.
The Supreme Court had reserved its verdict in the matter on September 5 after a 16-day hearing.
