South Africa will be kicking off their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka. Both the teams scraped through the World Cup based on ICC points. They will be entering the marquee event as the Dark Horses. South Africa has seen some of its notable players retire from the international scene in the last few years including the departures of AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Faf du Plessis and Hasim Amla. However, they have managed to rebuild well as they are currently placed fourth in the list of the best ODI teams in the world. They have also recorded multiple ODI series victories in 2023 against teams like Australia, the Netherlands and the West Indies. They played their last game against New Zealand ahead of the World Cup, which they lost by seven runs. They will be looking to pick up the momentum once again, starting with their game against Sri Lanka.
October 5 will see South Africa and Sri Lanka clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Sri Lanka were on a brilliant run in ODIs that saw them record a 13-match streak in the Asia Cup. However, since their loss in the final of that tournament against India, Sri Lanka has looked a little flustered. It will be interesting to see if they can return to their previous form as they take on South Africa in their upcoming game.
