Panaji: Shripad Yesso Naik of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Francisco Sardinha, joint candidate of Congress-National Communist Party (NCP), have retained their North and South Goa parliamentary seats respectively in the state.
While, Naik polled 1,31,905 votes to record a hat-trick and defeat his nearest NCP rival Jitendra Deshprabhu by a margin of over 6000 votes, sitting MP Francisco Sardinha defeated BJP's Narendra Sawaikar by a margin of over 12,000 votes.
North Goa collector K S Singh told mediapersons that one of the electronic voting machine (EVM) in booth no 5 of Cumbarjua constituency, sealed 462 votes, developed a technical fault for which the final counting could not be completed.
Only after consulting with the Election Commission, the final result of North Goa will be officially declared, he added.
Meanwhile, Naik, after his victory, speaking to media persons said his win was the victory of people of North Goa and his workers.
He also thanked all the people in the North Goa for reposing faith on him and his party to continue for the third term.
However, NCP-Congress joint candidate Deshprabhu said he was satisfied and happy with the verdict.
“I was expecting a big volume as I was the NCP-Congress joint candidate. I thanked all Congressmen and leaders of NCP who worked for me in this election,” he added.
