New Delhi: A battle royal on Friday erupted in Janata Dal (United) with George Fernandes being denied party ticket for contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Muzaffarpur in Bihar and the the veteran socialist making it
clear that he would defy the party by fighting from there.
Fernandes, who has not been keeping good health for quite some time now, was on Friday politely told by JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav that he would not be fielded from Muzaffarpur, which he has won five times.
In a letter to 79-year-old Fernandes, Yadav cited health grounds in deciding not to field him in the elections as it would be a strain on his health.
However, in his letter today, Yadav promised to nominate the nine-time Lok Sabha member to the Rajya Sabha "whenever the first vacancy arises from Bihar for the Upper House".
Shortly later, Fernandes shot back a letter to Yadav saying those associated with the Socialist movement never have a desire to sit in Rajya Sabha and that is why he had never been a member of it.
Maintaining that he has always been a Lok Sabha member and on the basis of his long experience in contesting elections, he could say that "I am fully capable of undertaking the additional burden of campaigning".
