New Delhi: Former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi is going back to school – to do a PhD on his party, the Shiv Sena.

"Joshi's proposal has been accepted by the University of Mumbai and he will begin his thesis very soon. The thesis will focus on the rise of the party, its success and the pitfalls," sources close to the 70-year old Rajya Sabha MP told PTI.

"He is one of oldest people to register for a doctorate in the university," they added.

Joshi's guide B Venkatesh Kumar, professor in-charge of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Contemporary Studies said the thesis will be unique as it is being done by a sainik, thus giving him access to information that an outsider may find difficult to gain.

"There have been thesis written on Shiv Sena before but this will be a unique project. As a guide, however, I always insist that the thesis be academic, scholarly and independent and I am sure this one too will be," Kumar told PTI.

A former chief minister of Maharashtra, Joshi also served in the Atal Behari Vajpayee government.
