Elon Musk-owned social media platform X is using all our data and posts to train its AI model Grok and most of us had no idea about it. That’s right, X was using our data for training purposes and it cheekily enabled the permission by default without asking millions of the users on its platform.
X has been making a broad set of changes since Musk has taken over, which includes the obvious transformation from Twitter to the new everything app where Musk and his team want to offer all the features possible.
It even includes an AI chatbot built with the help of X AI division that is also owned by Musk. Grok has been available on X for the Premium users but the developments clearly suggest that X has been harvesting all its users data to train the AI chatbot. You’ve often heard the phrase that there are no free lunches, and X seems to have taken it to the core with this move.
Many people have lashed out at the platform for this hidden move where the data sharing seems to have been enabled by default. We were independently able to verify these claims and found that our profile was also being used to train the X AI model without our consent. All the public outburst finally got the platform talking earlier this week, and this post here tells us the way to disable this option, which X says, is its way of giving users control of how their data is used.
X also mentions that the ability to disable this option is only available on the X web version for now, with the support on the mobile app rolling out soon.
How To Stop X From Using Your Data For AI Model
X has listed out the details about the process to disable the option where the platform is using your data and posts to train its AI model. That’s not all, X clearly mentions that your posts on the platform could also be shared with xAI for the training purposes.
– Open X on web browser
– Login with the X account details
– Click on More on the left side tab of the app
– Go to Settings and Privacy
– Go To Privacy and Safety
– Scroll down to Data sharing and personalisation
– Click on Grok at the bottom
– You will see the message “Allow your posts as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning,”
– Uncheck the box next to it
X also mentions the following about what happens if you consent to this option, “To continuously improve your experience, we may utilise your X posts as well as your user interactions, inputs and results with Grok for training and fine-tuning purposes. This also means that your interactions, inputs, and results may also be shared with our service provider xAI for these purposes.” X is also giving you the option to delete the conversation but we’re not sure if it will stop the earlier posts and chats from being used for this purpose.
Practices like these are invariably going to bring Musk and Co under intense scrutiny from the regulators, especially in countries like the EU where the laws are strict and they can be heavily penalised.
