The T20 World Cup 2024 Super-8 matchups are progressing well with the final week of league matches to go. So far, four teams have booked a place in the Super-8, while a few heavyweights need help to make it to the next phase of the tournaments. With some shocking results and rain-interrupted games, the equation for the remaining four spots in the Super 8 has become very interesting. Here’s a look at Group-wise scenarios for Super 8 qualifications for the teams in contention.
Group A – India Through Pakistan on a Sticky Wicket
India is the first team to book a place in the Super 8 from Group A after their third win against the USA on Wednesday at the Nassau County International Stadium, New York. Even though it was a nervy win on a pitch that was not easy to bat on, India managed to stave off the spirited co-hosts to claim six points from three games, thus ensuring they will play in the Super 8.
How Pre-Decided Team Seedings Sets up India vs Australia T20 World Cup Super-8 Match on June 24
With one spot remaining from Group 1, there is a fight between the USA and Pakistan. With their losses to the USA and India, Pakistan finds themselves in a precarious position, even though they got their first win – beating Canada. With one more game remaining, against Ireland, Pakistan need to win that game to qualify for Super 8. The USA has two wins and needs one more point to seal. Their final league game is also against Ireland; a win will ensure their qualification. But if it is a washout – which seems a high possibility owing to the weather forecast in Florida for the week – the USA and Ireland will share points, meaning the USA will knock out Pakistan and make it to the Super 8.
Technically, Ireland and Canada are also not out of the race for the Super 8. Both teams potentially can go up to 4 points at the end of the league stages. If that happens, all teams, barring India, will be locked at 4 points each, and the Net run rate could decide the second qualifier from this group.
Group B – Australia Through, England Struggling
With three wins in three games, Australia has sealed their passage for Super 8, but Scotland, with 5 points from three games, is giving a run for their money to the defending champions England, who are languishing in fourth place with only 1 point from two games. Their opener against Scotland was washed out, and they lost to Australia. On the other hand, Scotland won handsomely against Oman to boost their run-rate after getting the better of Namibia. Their final league game is against Australia, and a win against the Aussies will see them go through to the next round.
But if they lose to Australia, they will remain on 5 points. England, with games left against Oman and Namibia, needs to win both their games with handsome margins to get their NRR up and over Scotland. Namibia and Oman are out of the race for Super 8 qualification from the group.
Group C – West Indies Through; Afghanistan Closing in
With a win over New Zealand today, West Indies have sealed their Super 8 spot, winning all three of their fixtures and accumulating 6 points. With a heavy loss to Afghanistan and now to WI, NZ is languishing at the bottom of the table with two losses in two matches. Technically, NZ is still in me, but if Afghanistan manages to win one of their two games – vs Papua New Guinea and West Indies – they will seal that second spot. Even if Afghanistan ends with 4 points and NZ go up to 4 with wins in their next two games – vs PNG and Uganda, their heavy loss to Afghanistan will come back to bite them. NZ must punch PNG and Uganda to boost their net run rate and hope WI beat AFG.
Group D – South Africa Through; Bangladesh, Netherlands Fight for Other Spot
South Africa, with three nervy wins – vs Bangladesh, Netherlands and Sri Lanka are also through to Super 8 with one match. For the second spot, the fight is between Bangladesh and the Netherlands, even though Nepal and Sri Lanka are not technically out. Bangladesh’s two remaining fixtures are against the Netherlands and Nepal, while the Netherlands faces Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which is a tricky proposition. With one game and one point in hand, Sri Lanka can only reach a maximum of 3 points, while Bangladesh and Netherlands can go up to at least 4 points, if not six. With one washout and one loss, Nepal is left with two games – vs South Africa and Bangladesh at Kingstown. In a tournament of upsets, one cannot assume that Nepal would be easy pushovers for the other teams, but Bangladesh and the Netherlands will fancy their chances against the Asian side. The Key game in this group will be the BAN vs NED game on Thursday, and in all likelihood, the winner of the game could very well eventually become the second team to qualify for the Super 8
