The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee dropped the bombshell on Tuesday evening, rolling out the 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West. Though it appears to be a balanced side, the non-selection of Rinku Singh has certainly sparked a fresh debate.

Rinku has been playing the finisher’s role for India since making his debut in the shortest format. However, the selectors overlooked the left-hander to accommodate four all-rounders, namely Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, putting him on the list of travelling reserves.
Former India opener K Srikkanth wasn’t happy at all with the squad announced for the showpiece event, scheduled to happen in the West Indies and the US. Expressing his displeasure in a video uploaded on YouTube, he called it a ‘rubbish selection’ and accused the board of making Rinku the ‘scapegoat’.
“He has played match-winning knocks in South Africa. Remember the game against Afghanistan in which Rohit scored a hundred? India were 22 for 4; from there they scored 212. Rinku played a crucial knock. He has given his all whenever he has played for India. This is rubbish, rubbish selection! Why do you need four spinners? All of them have to go? You have made the selection to please a few people and you have made Rinku Singh a scapegoat,” he said in the video.

Srikkanth, who picked the 2011 World Cup-winning squad as the selection committee chairman, asserted that Rinku should have been there in the team, even if the decision-makers had to drop Yashasvi Jaiswal.
“I am not at all happy. Come on all of you. Rinku Singh has been spoken about all over the world. He has performed at each and every opportunity he has got. How can you drop Rinku Singh? You drop anyone else, it doesn’t matter. In my view, Rinku Singh should have been there, even if that meant you had to drop Yashasvi Jaiswal,” he added.

Rinku made his international debut in the Ireland series last year, He has accumulated 356 runs in 5 games, striking at 176.24. His last international appearance was against Afghanistan in January 2024.
