The Mukherjee Nagar area in Delhi, renowned as a major hub for UPSC coaching, faces the threat of losing its demand. Thousands of students from across India come here to prepare for the civil services exam, with coaching institutes located on nearly every street. Following a recent tragic death at a coaching centre’s basement in Rajinder Nagar, the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) has begun cracking down on such institutes operating in basements. This crackdown has also affected the prominent Drishti IAS coaching institute, which is now relocating from Mukherjee Nagar to Noida. According to reports, Drishti IAS is not alone; several other coaching institutes are also contemplating a move to Noida due to the deteriorating infrastructure and lack of improvement in West Delhi.
Many coaching classes are closed after the Rajinder Nagar incident. This has worried the owners of coaching institutes as well as small businessmen, landlords and students. Many coaching institutes are already relocating to areas like Karol Bagh and Wazirabad. A senior management member of Drishti IAS expressed apprehension that Mukherjee Nagar may become deserted in the near future as most of the coaching institutes will have to move out. Most of the buildings do not meet the government norms. The infrastructure here does not meet the rules required for fire and safety NOC.
There are more than 100 coaching institutes running in Mukherjee Nagar, which do not fulfil the criteria required for fire and safety NOC. On July 27, an untoward incident struck Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, resulting in the tragic loss of three civil services aspirants’ lives. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire brigade personnel arrived at the scene within hours of the incident. They conducted an intense rescue operation, employing ropes and specialised equipment to reach those trapped. Although their efforts managed to save several lives, the floodwaters hindered the rescue of three students.
