Without sounding like a know-it-all art expert, I would like to believe artist A Viswam's works, which  are on display at Focus Art Gallery, have their roots in the American post-World War Two art movement — abstract expressionism. California-based abstract expressionist, Jay Mueser, once wrote about one of his  paintings, “It is far better to capture the glorious spirit of the sea than to paint all of its tiny ripples.” So may be,  artist A Visvam is trying to do something similar in his current series,  Eternal elements. The blazing yellows, oranges, and the cool blues and greens capture the essence of nature as a whole, and don't deconstruct it bit by bit. If you look at his 63 oil-on-canvas paintings, you are sure to notice the fact that he is highly inspired by nature. The way he has combined bright colours with the comparatively dull ones, brings each one of them to life, without making the canvas look like a riot of colours. The strokes are swift, animated and have a language of their own. The pressure applied while painting and the thickness of the brush are the two factors that determine the expressiveness of the strokes. Talking to City Express about his inspiration and what led him to create his current series, Viswam says, “Nature inspires me the most. You must have noticed in my current series that I have used the five elements of nature —earth, water, air, sky and fire. I am, most of the times, overawed by the endlessness of nature. I believe I'm in a journey where I want to discover the vastness of nature.” Talking about the response to his current show, he says, “It has been good so far. It has been a very special experience to have people from across the city at the show. But I cannot lose focus as an artist, I have to continue doing my work.”(The art exhibition is on at Focus Art Gallery till  February 15. For details, call 24986611)
