THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has decided to set up major garbage processing plants in Thrissur, Kottayam and Kollam districts, in addition to the ones planned in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. A special cabinet meeting held on Thursday has also decided to instal a model successful plant at a suitable place among anyone of the six locations, to remove all doubts in the minds of the people. The government is keen to expedite an action plan and implement garbage management across the state, keeping the fast approaching monsoon season in mind, the Chief Minister told reporters after the cabinet meeting. He said that the model plant, which would be selected after extensive search, would be totally pollution-free and zero-waste generating, thereby creating a ground for installing major plants at select locations. Before its finalisation, measures will be launched on a war-footing for pre-monsoon clearance of wastes in the state, he said.“Another special cabinet meeting, slated for June 4, will chalk out a course of action,” the Chief Minister said.Chandy said that there was a credibility loss for both the government and city corporation in the Vilappilsala issue and hence instead of looking at the site once again on this score was not practical. “A new location has to be found out for processing the city wastes. It will be decided soon,” he said and added that attempts to reopen the garbage yard and plant had met with stiff resistance from the local people.“Going by their experience, people cannot be expected to toe a favourable line,” he said.
