THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kozhikode has emerged as the leading employment provider among the tier III cities in the country during the fourth quarter of the fiscal 2011-12.In a study on ‘Emerging employment centre in tier II and tier III cities’ brought out by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), Kozhikode was ranked the highest with a share of 227 per cent. The cities of Ambala and Dehradun were ranked second and third constituting 123.8 per cent and 26.7 per cent of the total vacancies offered.In Kozhikode, the top five sectors which have created maximum job opportunities include ITeS , automobile, banking, engineering and insurance. In case of Dehradun, the top five sectors offering employment opportunities were academics, automobile, insurance, banking and ITeS while in the case of Ambala, banking, bio-technology, financial services, FMCG and insurance were the leading employment providers. Among tier II cities, Jaipur emerged as the leading employment provider with a share of 58.5 per cent followed by Pune and Surat of 10.2 per cent and 5.2 per cent respectively.In tier II and tier III cities, financial services sector provided the maximum number of employment opportunities. The sector contributed a share of 21.5 per cent and 26.5 per cent in tier II and tier III cities respectively in terms of job openings.The second largest share of vacancies in the emerging cities was in the IT sector with a share of 19 per cent in tier II cities and 20.5 per cent in tier III cities of the total sample.The IT and IT-enabled services provided maximum job openings in Jaipur, Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad and Nagpur among tier II cities. The low-cost cities of Dehradun, Mangalore, Jalandhar and Aurangabad were the most sought-after by the IT firms amongst tier III cities.
