Kuniyil, a village near here in Malappuram, is all set to welcome its local hero K T Irfan, who finished 10th in the Men’s 20km Race Walk event at the London Olympics. Irfan will reach his home town on Monday, one day after the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The natives are planning many programmes to welcome their ‘walker’, who is coming back home after stamping the name of Kuniyil, his native village, in the international sports arena. They have been eagerly waiting for the moment for the past two weeks.
Kuniyil had celebrated Irfan’s selection to the Olympics in a grant way. This time, they plan to give a reception more colourful than the previous one.
“I really wished to be there at my home for the Eid celebrations but I could not. I really miss my home town and home on this special occasion,” Irfan told Express. Irfan was at his coaching centre in Patiala on the day of Eid-Ul-Fitr. Irfan will reach Karipur on Monday afternoon.
“The reception will start from the airport itself. Many people from different walks of life will gather at the airport to receive him. He will also receive mementos from various places on the way to his home,” Salman, Irfan’s friend said.
Different organisations, local institutions and Devagiri College would honour Irfan in the coming days. The local people here are also planning surprises for their hero. Political organisations will also give mementos to Irfan for his superb performance in the Olympics.
He has also promised to spend two complete days with his friends during his whirlwind visit to home. Irfan will return to Patiala on August 30. Due to the hectic schedule of receptions, most probably, he may not get enough time to spent with his family and visit relatives. Irfan has to start his training as soon as possible, aiming the 2016 Olympics medal.
