Maharashtra Man Tries to Kill Self-proclaimed Godman Who 'Took Money to Bring Good Luck', Arrested
The accused told the police that he took the step as his family members had come under the influence of the godman and they provided money to him as he promised to give 'tabeez' (amulet) to them for good luck and protection.

Nagpur police have arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly trying to kill a self-proclaimed godman after he took money from the former’s family members under the pretext of bringing them good luck.

The man identified as Mohammed Qureshi, was arrested on Tuesday and a case was registered against him at Panchpaoli police station, said police.

The self-styled godman, Baba Shaikh Umar, is 75 years old.

“The accused told the police that he took the step as his family members had come under the influence of the godman and they provided money to him as he promised to give ‘tabeez’ (amulet) to them for good luck and protection. He misled them into believing that he possessed supernatural powers,” a police official said to news agency PTI.

Qureshi was upset with the self-styled godman. At 7.15 pm on Tuesday, Qureshi stabbed Shaikh with a knife near the Teka area, in which he suffered serious injuries.

The accused then fled from the scene, while Shaikh was later taken to a hospital in a critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment.

The 19-year-old man was later arrested by the Nagpur police and a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 307 (attempt to murder) was registered against him, the police said.

In another murder case that happened in the Chembur area in Mumbai, a man was found hanging from a tree. The officials have arrested two persons in this connection.

Though initially, the police registered an accidental death report, they suspected the man was killed as some marks were found on the body, the official from Tilak Nagar police station said.

When the police enquired with residents of the locality where the body was found, some persons told them that they saw two men assaulting the victim on the day of the incident.

The persons also told the police that they had tried to intervene, but later left from there as the attackers did not listen to them, the official said.
