Juhi Chawla lent her voice to the character of Sita in the animated movie ‘Ramayana: The Epic’, which released on 15th October.
Juhi says, “My voice-over experience has been interesting. When you dub for yourself you have already enacted the scene and you have to match your voice to that. But it is pretty different to give your voice to an animated character as there are no visuals."
"I was explained the scene and given details like how far is Sita standing from Ram and how is the mood of the scene. You have to imagine the distance, the ambience, and emote your voice accordingly. To do that in a small studio space was a little difficult. It was indeed a challenging task.”
And another problem she faced was speaking fluently in Hindi. “Our Hindi has been deteriorating over the years. Our day to day language is more 'Hinglish'. While doing an animation film, dubbing must be in a language you are comfortable and fluent in. The diction in this film took a little time to get used to.”
There were times when Juhi had to take re-takes to capture the right mood in her voice. She says, “There was a scene when Hanuman comes to Ashok Vatika and show Sita Ram’s ring. Sita gets teary eyed and asks Hanuman when Ram would rescue her. To capture the right mood of this scene was a tough task.”
Quiz her about her knowledge of Ramayana and she admits, “It is limited. I have to admit that my daughter knows more of Ramayana and other Indian mythologies than I do. I have learnt all my mythology from Amar Chitra back then.”
