HYDERABAD: To prevent flooding and submergence of low lying areas in five assembly segments of Hyderabad during the monsoon, the state government is laying trunk sewers for a whopping Rs 33 crore to facilitate the free flow of sewerage. The works for laying the pipelines over a 16 km stretch will be inaugurated on Wednesday and will be completed within the next six months.Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Handlooms and Textile Minister P Shanker Rao said that more than 50 lakh people residing in about 200 areas including 200 slums will be benefited by the programme. The officials have prepared an action plan after analysing the data of sewerage flooding for the past 100 years. "Four major sewerage pipelines will be laid covering the Assembly constituencies of Secunderabad Cantonment, Secunderabad, Sanathnagar, Kukatpally, and Serlingampally. A meeting was held today at the Secretariat with the officials concerned including the traffic police, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HWWSSB), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other departments. Several low lying areas were getting inundated due to the floods caused by heavy rains over the past a few years. People of these areas will be relieved from such problems," said Shanker Rao. He said the project is being carried out entirely by the state government as the Secunderabad Cantonment Board has failed to take up the works.
