Pradosh Vrat significance

There are several religious legends attached to the Pradosh Vrat, one of them suggests that on this day all the gods assembled on the muhurta of Pradosh to appeal to Lord Shiva to seek his help in eradicating the demons. When they reached Mount Kailash, they were greeted by Nandi (Shiva’s sacred bull vahana). Lord Shiva agreed to help the gods due to which the tradition of worshipping Shiva on trayodashi began.

Another belief is that Pradosh was the kala when Lord Shiva came back to his sensibility after consuming the poison from the Samudra manthan and danced the tandava on top of Nandi. It is suggested that during the Pradosh time, Lord Shiva is in an ecstatic state and blesses devotees who seek his help.

Pradosh Vrat Puja Rituals

On this day, devotees wake up early and light up an earthen lamp in front of the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati after taking bath. They also offer flowers and sweets to God and recite Pradosh Vrat katha, Lord Shiva’s aarti to chant Mahamrityunjay Mantra 108 times.

The devotees also visit Lord Shiva’s temple to perform puja and abhishekam with panchamrit.

They are also expected to fast and prepare a bhog without the use of onion and garlic to offer to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
