At the Delhi Comic Con 2015, we got a chance to witness some of the latest and coolest comics and graphic novels on display but what caught our geeky attention was the amalgamation of technology with the world of comics.
Although digital comics have been here for quite sometime now, the merger of e-books and comics with a cinematic experience is a budding segment. An upcoming smartphone app called Raconteur has been developed keeping in mind exactly that.
Manju from Cornea Entertainment, the company behind the new smartphone app, introduced the app based on the concept of cinematic e-books. He explained what cinematic e-books are, how the modern technology is making not only the avid comic or cinema lovers embrace the novel concept, but also making sure that no segment of the human geography is left out.
In our quick conversation with Manju, we got an insight into how the new technology is helping preserve the old tradition of storytelling, albeit in a more tech-oriented manner suiting modern consumers.
IBNLive: Do you think with the coming of technology, the concept of storytelling has transformed?
Manju: It is always good to embrace newer technology and that doesn’t mean it has taken away the charm of telling stories. The technology has only enhanced it with powerful graphics and sound. As consumers adapt to new technology, we need to do the same in order to suit their needs. At Cornea Entertainment we have been working on delivering novel stories through our app Raconteur.
IBNLive: How has technology changed storytelling from the good-old grandma narration to the modern tap-based version?
Manju: The problem earlier was there were only a number of stories that you could hear and only some could be passed on, but today we have so many stories happening all over the world in what we call the global village. So it becomes important for kids and other people to get stories from across the globe and the only way to make that happen is through the digital platform. The idea is to bring content from all over the world in a personalized environment. With personalisation, comes individual experience. We are trying to make use of that technology in a constructive way by coming out with cinematic e-books and comics.
IBNLive: What exactly are cinematic e-books ?
Manju: There lies a gap between cinema and books and our initiative is aimed at bridging that gap. A cinematic experience is when you have a story along with the audio visual component added to it. We are trying to make use of the technology in a constructive way by the cinematic e books and comics.
IBNLive: Tell us about the Raconteur app.
Manju: Our application has got a wide variety of titles for younger kids, older kids, adults, even the new-age nannies or mothers who want to read out stories to their kids. So the old grandma concept is still here with the bit of technology added to it. If you go through any of our stories, you'll see how along with the powerful graphics and sound effects, there is also an element of learning which is especially helpful for kids. As part of Read India movement, we have collaborated with Pratham Books and taken some of their stories and included our own flavor to it.
After Manju offered us to have a small preview of the Raconteur app, I must admit, it was indeed an engaging experience with stunning graphics and sound. The public release of the app for iOS and Android is due for January 2016.
