A Chinese man is turning heads by proudly accepting his life as a ‘kept man,’ meaning, the man is fully dependent on his Japanese wife. In the local social media app, Douyin, the man is known as Sudden Fantasy and he has quickly built a large following, mainly due to his unique lifestyle choice. The man, who has lived in Japan for eight years, challenges traditional gender roles that usually see men as the main earners while women manage home. As per the South China Morning Post, the individual describes himself as “an ordinary man from Beijing,” and claims that he receives unconditional support from his wife, Fenghua, who comes from a wealthy Japanese family.
While his wife handles all their household expenses, he spends most of his days playing video games. The man reveals that his wife has even set aside a jar containing 260,000 yen (approximately Rs 1 lakh) for regular use, which he claims he cannot repay. He supports his wife in various ways and reveals that he wakes up at 7 AM on Sundays but stays in bed when she finally decides to wake up hours later. He joins her while she checks her phone until around 3 PM. He believes that getting up early might make her anxious, so he chooses to remain in bed to help her relax.
Speaking to the portal, the man, known as Sudden Fantasy, says, “I’m like a vulture hovering around, keeping an eye on her. There aren’t many clothes to hang, but letting her do it all alone would make her resentful.”
He makes sure his wife is comfortable by letting her take a shower first, so that she doesn’t have to step on the cold and wet bathroom floor. He knows how unpleasant it can be to walk on chilly tiles after a long day at work and how quickly it can ruin someone’s good mood. To help her feel relaxed, he always ensures the bathroom is dry before she uses it.
He adds, “You will not last long if you’re just doing things to be nice to her; you’ll eventually burn out. Willpower is limited. You need to discover a way for both of you to live together harmoniously; what I do is not just for her, but also for me. That is my ultimate philosophy as a kept man.”
During the initial stage, he wasn’t interested in a romantic relationship due to his financial struggles. However, things changed when he wasn’t able to afford daily meals. Fenghua stepped in to help him by buying food and even covered his tuition fees. After two years of dating, the couple decided to exchange vows.
