CP Gurnani, the former CEO and Managing Director of Tech Mahindra bid farewell to the company after serving the organisation for almost two decades. Announcing his retirement from corporate life via LinkedIn, the 66 year old shared insights he garnered from his remarkable tenure and spoke about why teamwork is necessary. Gurnani’s farewell letter encouraged individuals to strive for excellence and secure the top spot on the stage. This announcement came month after he decided to step down from the roles of MD and CEO on December 19 along with his resignation from the roles of non-executive, non-independent director of the IT major on December 21.
He wrote, “In Bollywood movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, India’s champion athlete Milkha Singh is running in Pakistan against rival Abdul Khaliq. He gets told by the Pakistani Coach, “Ye aapki zindagi ki aakhri race ho sakti hai.” Milkha replies, “Daudunga bhi waise hi.” There’s grace in learning like it’s your first time at something, and beauty in delivering like it’s your last and you need both, every day. My message to you is simple, at some point of time in my life, I’ve been each one of you. So, you must know that you could be anywhere if you put your heart to it. This is about individual excellence and you should aim for nothing but the first, top, best spot on the stage. It’s in your hands, make the best use of your talent and time. Build yourself.”
CP Gurnani further spoke about the importance of teamwork, comparing it to a relay race. He stated that in both professional and personal life, success often happens on collaboration. Gurnani advises individual strengths but focusing more on recognizing weaknesses and influence others’ strengths to achieve shared victories. He also stresses that journey is nothing without a supportive team that includes, life partners, friends, colleagues, mentors, skills and networks.
He suggests that as individuals grow, they move closer to discovering their purpose in life and shares that life is more than work and regular paychecks. Gurnani believes that within everyone, there’s a heart waiting for the right motivation to beat stronger. He encourages self-analysis to discover ways to contribute positively to the world and urges individuals to choose paths that resonate with them and actively participate in building a better world.
Ever since the post was shared on LinkedIn, CP Gurnani’s message has touched many hearts, garnering over 7000 likes and numerous positive comments. Following Gurnani’s retirement, Tech Mahindra appointed Mohit Joshi, who had previously resigned from Infosys in March 2023, as the new MD and CEO.
