A recent EasyJet flight from Lisbon to Manchester faced an unexpected delay, which caught passengers off guard. While the plane was fully boarded and set to depart, the pilot made an unusual announcement and explained the cause of the delay. Passengers were surprised to learn that the flight was on hold because the pilot claimed the crew can’t survive on two sandwiches during the flight. Taking matters into his own hands, the unmade pilot decided to delay the flight to ensure the crew had better food options, even if it meant going through security and passport checks all over again. According to reports from the Daily Mail, a passenger mentioned that the pilot returned with a box of pizza to ensure the crew had adequate food for the two-hour flight ahead.
As per the video obtained by the portal, the pilot could be heard explaining, “I couldn’t feed the crew with two poor sandwiches. I had to leave back to the terminal, go through the security check again, passport checks and when I asked if I can skip the queue to buy something for the crew while passengers are waiting, the answer was no. So I had to queue with 100 persons. Thank you for your patience. Now we are going hopefully. Thank you for your patience, bye.”
An EasyJet spokesperson stated, “We are sorry that this flight from Lisbon to Manchester was delayed due to insufficient catering being available onboard for the crew. We are required to ensure that our crew have sufficient provisions onboard to operate safely.”
As per an anonymous passenger, “The flight departure was delayed until after 4 PM due to not having any crew available to attend. When the crew arrived and we boarded the plane the crew announced that there would be further delays to get the crew some food. The pilot decided to go and get some for his crew and delay the flight further. Apparently, sandwiches weren’t good enough so we had a further hour delay on the plane whilst this pilot went to get hot food. They couldn’t make it through a 2hr50 flight on sandwiches.”
Throughout the situation, passengers weren’t given food and toilet access. The passenger expressed that it would have been preferable for passengers to remain in the airport lounge before boarding until the crew’s food requirements were fulfilled. No refreshments or food were provided during the wait. On the flight, some passengers received complimentary refreshments, while others did not. The flight from Lisbon to Manchester, UK was late by 3 hours and the person claimed that they would have chosen an alternative flight if they had known about the delay in advance.
