CHENNAI: A team of four students of aerospace engineering has been placed third in the foreign university category of NASA’s “Environmentally Responsible (Green) Aviation College Student Challenge” held in May 2011. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, USA, had invited students to propose ideas and designs for future aircraft that use less fuel, produce less harmful emissions and less noise. The team, from the Department of Aerospace, SRM University, Kattankulathur, consisted of Akshay Garg, Surya Kiran Peravalli, Abdul Sayeed Khan and Pate Sweety Prakash. The team was guided by G Mahendra Perumal, Assistant Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, SRM University. They designed an airplane for 200 passengers, incorporating technologies for fuel efficiency and aerodynamic performance among others. This conceptual aircraft has been named “SERA (SRM Environmentally Responsible) Airliner”.Although substantial progress has been made in improving aerospace activities to be more eco-friendly, there is still scope for improvement. NASA’s project continuously tries to come up with technologies that will help mitigate the impact of aviation on the environment. In order to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists, NASA places technical challenges every year before students in this area.
