Wary drivers opt for divine neem

Worried about driving an accident-prone vehicle? Just take a leaf out of the TNSTC staff book here and tie a bunch of neem leaves to the bumper. That should give you a smooth, accident-free ride. At least, that is what TNSTC employees here believe.

The TNSTC experiment started with a bus — plying between Peravurani and Thanjavur and to Pudukkottai through Mettupatti and Keeramangalam — that is said to have met with a series of accidents over the last two weeks. According to drivers familiar with the Pudukkottai-Pervavurani stretch, the road in poor shape and two-wheeler riders are often rash. Despite all caution by bus drivers, accidents continued.

The flummoxed crew was scratching its head trying to find a solution when it got the brainwave four days ago of tying neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves to the bumper. Ever since, it has been smooth sailing, according to TNSTC staff. No accidents, no close brushes, concur commuters. Other bus drivers have sought to do an encore.

Neem leaves do have therapeutic properties. But whether or not they act as a relaxant is not clear. However, going by the drivers experience, they do. They claim their driving is now fearless and relaxed.

What's your reaction?
